Signs of Our Times

For Immediate Release: Signs of Our Times opens Saturday September 13, 2008.

Opening reception is Saturday September 13, 2008

6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

This exhibit explores different changes in the Southern California zeitgeist including transformations of the landscape, pivotal legislation & awe-inspiring events. In addition to investigating historical methods, this kid-friendly exhibit invites visitor participation will include:

The Timeline: A massive interactive timeline that tracks concepts of place through material culture, legislative change & the landscape and will include a corresponding soundscape.

The Neighborhood Wall: A wall of photographs & essays submitted as part of the Studio's "My Neighborhood" Photo/Essay Challenge. Read entries from a diverse set of Southern Californians and find common ground. Does your history matter?

Community Quilt: Back by popular demand & re-vamped to include recent entries, this Community Quilt is a series of connected quilt blocks. Each block represents a woman who has made (or is continuing to make) a contribution to Southern California history.

LA History Pinball Machine: the first of its kind, this pinball machine is set in downtown Los Angeles and is a lesson in local history and landmarks from Grand Central Market to the Coca Cola Bottling Company. The layout of the game uses the city’s streets to explore public art and transportation.
