Volunteer/Internships
 

Volunteer Program:
The Studio has an ongoing Volunteer program where individuals assist in the capacity they best fit whether it be sewing for an exhibit or indexing extant oral histories. The Studio welcomes volunteers to assist with oral history collection, walking tours, photographing the region in tandem with student competitions and exhibits, and with assistance at our bi-annual Story Symposium. Internship Program:
The Studio's internships encourage students to explore careers related to history and archival management, structured around current and on-going programs that facilitate learning experiences for Southern Californians. Internships are open to majors from: Art History; East Asian Languages and Cultures; English; Writing; Anthropology; Asian American Studies; Chicana and Chicano Studies; Communication Studies; Geography; History; Political Science; Sociology; Afro-American Studies; American Indian Studies; Women's Studies; Architecture and Urban Design; Art; Design; Media Arts; Ethnomusicology; Theater; Film, Television, and Digital Media.

Graphics/Print
The intern will work in a Gallery setting at the Studio for Southern California History and outside of the Studio, assisting the Creative Director as required and appropriate. At the end of each quarter, interns will have contributed to a "living" digital archive for the region within the Studio's online database. The intern will help maintain equipment, record interviews and data; scan historical documents and photographs; and assist in the preparation of outreach print material. 8-10 hours per week. Students will be required to keep a weekly journal and write a short paper that will be presented at a public event hosted by the Studio. (total internships available: 1)

Skills the Intern May Acquire:

•  Communication skills, both written and oral

•  Knowledge of the use and maintenance of video equipment suitable for oral histories

•  Experience in print making from conception to final product.

•  Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Final Cut Pro (Intern will attend training courses in the use of these software packages provided at the Studio)

•  Ability to conduct historical research online, in person, and in the archive.

Researcher
The intern will work in a Gallery setting at the Studio for Southern California History and outside of the Studio, assisting the Director and Staff as required and appropriate. Projects may include assisting with the preparation and planning publications and public exhibitions; conducting and editing oral histories; assisting with coordinating walking tours and symposia; and conducting background research, writing and fact checking. 8-10 hours per week. Students will be required to keep a weekly journal and write a short paper that will be presented at a public event hosted by the Studio. (total internships available: 0)

Skills the Intern May Acquire:

•  Communication skills, both written and oral

•  Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Final Cut Pro (Intern will attend training courses in the use of these software packages provided at the Studio)

•  Experience in conducting an oral history from start to finish.

•  Ability to conduct historical research online, in person, and in the archive.

Education
The intern will work with the Studio's Director and Director of Outreach, assisting as required and appropriate. Projects may include assisting with the preparation and planning for outreach programs, assisting with coordinating workshops. 8-10 hours per week. Students will be required to keep a weekly journal and write a short paper that will be presented at a public event hosted by the Studio. (total internships available: 1)

Skills the Intern May Acquire:

•  Communication skills, both written and oral

•  The ability to implement local history into curriculum for different levels of engagement.

•  Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Final Cut Pro (Intern will attend training courses in the use of these software packages provided at the Studio)

•  Ability to conduct historical research online, in person, and in the archive.
