"Franklin Canyon & the LA Aqueduct"

Time: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 pm
Date: Sunday January 13, 2008
Meeting Place: the Sooky Goldman Nature Center, which is a building up the trail from the main parking lot at the north end of the park.Directions at bottom of page.

William Mulholland's Los Angeles Aqueduct allowed for the transformation of the arid Los Angeles basin into the nation's largest metropolitan region. The original aqueduct is now only a part of a vast water network, though its legacy is preserved at the Franklin Canyon site of the Santa Monica National Recreation Area, with the presence of a dam, power generating station, & its associated lake part of the original aqueduct system & now part of National Park system. This 11⁄2 hour-tour explores the nature of the original aqueduct system & how it has evolved, along with the creation of the Franklin Canyon site as the gem that it is. The tour is led by the son & father team of Aaron & Allan Gluck.

Directions:
To reach the North Entrance from the West side:
1. From the San Diego Freeway (405), exit Mulhulland heading east, and travel 4 miles.
2. At Franklin Canyon Drive (the same intersection where Mulholland meets Coldwater), make a right.
3. At the first stop sign, make a sharp left into the large Parking Lot.
4. Look for Registration/Check In at the wood fence and small bridge where there is a gap in the fence.

To reach the North Entrance from the San Fernando Valley:
(Franklin Canyon is a 10 minute drive from the intersection of Ventura Blvd. and Coldwater Canyon)

2. At intersection with Mulholland Dr. and Franklin Cyn Drive (at the summit of the hill and directly across from Tree People), bear right onto Franklin Cyn Dr.

To reach the South Entrance from the LA Basin:
(Franklin Canyon is a 10 minute drive from the intersection of Sunset Blvd. and Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills)
1. From the intersection of Sunset Blvd. and Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills, turn north (towards the hills) onto Beverly Drive
2. In about three blocks, as the road curves right, make a left turn to stay on Beverly (look for a green sign high on the right side that says " To Coldwater", almost hidden by trees). If you miss the left turn, you'll come back to Sunset.
3. At the first stop light (shown on the map) continue straight as the road becomes Coldwater Canyon Dr.
4. Travel a few miles. Mulhulland and Coldwater merge for a time, then split apart again at a lighted intersection with a Tree People sign to the right. Here, turn left onto Franklin Cyn Dr (a small street with houses).
